After his breakout experimental documentary The Act of Killing (2012), director Joshua Oppenheimer returns with a follow up film that focuses on one family’s history of Indonesia’s genocide. After discovering not only how their son died but also the identities of his killers, one of the brothers decides to confront these men. He works as an optometrist and interrogates the men while examining their eyes. Oppenheimer’s portrayal of trauma and violence is palpable and immediate. This is not a film for the faint-hearted. Watch The Act of Killing (it’s on Netflix) and then catch this gem at MSPIFF. Thankfully both screen before complete nightfall so your nightmares will be kept at bay.
