Celine Sciamma’s third film expertly integrates color, music, and dialogue in a stunning portrait of working class life in France. It follows Marieme, a teenage girl who lives in the projects outside of Paris and takes up with a fierce group of girls who offer her danger and excitement but also protection and stability. Evident from the opening scene—a group of girls playing American football under the lights in slow motion— Sciamma composes unforgettable shots that are both harrowing and beautiful. Girlhood is constantly gripping and the 113 minute run time flies by. This might be your only chance to see it in theaters in Minnesota so do not miss it! Sciamma is an auteur in the making and her films about, by, and for women is one of the most promising things in cinema today.
